What the Liberal dominated Hills Councillors don’t want you to know!

In March 2023, the Legislative Council in the NSW Parliament conducted an inquiry into Allegations of impropriety against agents of the Hills Shire Council. The below report is a result of those findings and the matter has been referred to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).

The Liberal-dominated Hills Shire Councillors are refusing to address the serious allegations it faces into alleged developer corruption. These matters were subject to a NSW Parliamentary Inquiry and are currently under investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). Yet Hills Liberal Councillors are showing a complete lack of transparency and accountability.

Here are just some key questions that need to be answered.

  1. Why did Liberal Party figures in the Hills fail to attend and provide evidence to the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into explosive allegations of developer corruption, other than former Mayor – Dr Michelle Byrne, former Councillor – Mr Alan Haselden and the Hills Shire Council General Manager – Mr Michael Edgar?
  2. Why were six former Liberal Hills Shire Councillors replaced prior to the 2021 elections without due process? We still don’t know!
  3. Why is Hills Shire Council pressing ahead without proper community consultation in destroying the Fred Caterson Reserve (Pony Club Site), directly adjacent to Castle Hill Cemetery, in order to build three rugby fields for Eastwood Rugby Club? The community is strongly opposed to this development that will destroy our precious remaining natural habitat in the Hills.
  4. Why has Hills Shire Council (led by Liberal Mayor Peter Gangemi) amended the Meeting Code of Practice to abolish the ability for a member of the public to speak and address Councillors on a Notice of Motion brought before the chamber? Hills Liberal Councillors are stopping people like you from having your say.
  5. Why are Hills Liberal Councillors refusing to livestream Council meetings when almost all major Sydney Councils provide this basic transparency measure?
  6. Why is the Liberal Mayor Peter Gangemi now feigning concern about local housing development when under his mayoralty, Hills Shire Council has approved a whopping 98% of Development Applications?

Our Council must listen, consult, be transparent and accountable to our Hills Shire Community
